My name is Peter Kernan. I am a senior Integrated Environmental Science Major at the Colorado College. Originally from Connecticut, I have moved to Colorado to pursue my unique intellectual adventure and establish myself as both an environmental academic as well as environmental activist.
I have specifically been heavily involved with small building thermal energy audits and retrofits with the college which is a perfect synthesis of concrete action yet academic integration. My summer research for 2010 involved analyzing low-income houses energy usage on the west side of Colorado Springs and using a grant given by the Osbourne Trust Fund to subsequently retrofit those homes.
Although, I am keen on environmental science from a scientific point of view, I am also interested in the subject from an educators perspective. Three out of the last four summers I have lead wilderness trips for ages 8 -16 and my personal goal throughout all of this has been to use these opportunities of outdoor adventure for environmental education. In addition I am heavily active in the Colorado College Outdoor Recreation Club, having helped lead the leader training program here since my sophomore year.
